The Benefits of Wine, Without the Buzz

The Benefits of Wine, Without the Buzz

For years, medical experts have been touting the benefits of red wine in moderation; specifically that a glass a day increases the levels of “good” cholesterol in the body and protects against artery damage. (source) Studies have also shown that applying wine directly to the skin can improve the healing of small wounds, reduce wrinkles, and decrease the small nodules that sometimes occur near joints in rheumatoid arthritis patients.

However wine is still alcohol: as a sedative it impairs motor functions, causes flushing and dehydration of the skin, mental confusion, blackouts, lack of coordination, seizures, vomiting, diarrhea, and other problems, especially when taken in large amounts. Drinking wine exacerbates other problems such as asthma, gout, high blood pressure, triglyceride levels, and sleep problems such as insomnia and sleep apnea. Regular long term usage can lead to more serious problems, such as substance dependency, mental problems, heart conditions, liver cirrhosis, pancreatic failure, and even cancer. So that glass of wine per day may have some benefits in the short term, but drinking every day is not good for your health in the long term.

If you've been enjoying a glass or more of wine per day at the suggestion of the mass media, you may want to slow down your consumption a bit. The best way to accomplish this is to limit your drinking of actual wine to one or two days of the week (such as, on the weekends). Meanwhile, resveratrol supplements provide healthier ways of achieving the same benefits as a glass of red wine per day, without the potential risks. Resveratrol is the anti-oxidant agent in wine that is beneficial in increasing good cholesterol, protecting arteries, and reviving the skin and joints. In fact, without the dehydrating and flushing effects of alcohol, resveratrol supplements and cosmetics can make you start looking younger and healthier immediately.
